March 21st 2018 I had an amazing opportunity to tour Ameren Missouri nuclear power plant. I learned so much. Thanks to Anne Roselius, I had the privilege of attending on elected official day. It was a pretty big turn out. We started with introductions. Followed by, a delicious lunch provided by a local company called Crushed Red in Columbia. During lunch time we watched a very informative power point presentation.

Do you know how many nuclear power plants are operating in the United States?   Only - 99.
Ameren Missouri employees 3,600 people, overall employs 8,600. I was impressed to learn that  G.I. Jobs magazine has ranked Ameren among the Top 100 Military Friendly Employers in the United StatesAmeren Missouri's electric rates are 19% below the national average and 15% below the midwest average.

After a lunch and a brief power-point presentation we broke up into groups of 5 with our tour-guides. We went through an extensive security check. Ameren employees have to go through a retina scanner and a puffer every day. The security was top notch. They employee over 100 armed security guards. The security guards work 24/7.

We continued on with the tour by going through the different stages of the nuclear power plant. The shear size of this facility is mind blowing. I really enjoyed the control room, I just thought it was really cool - like something you see in the movies. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. It was a really pleasant experience.

Rick Eastman – Legislative Rep and John Patterson, Director Nuclear Projects were great tour guides. They answered all my questions. The tour started at 11am and ended at 2pm. At the end of the tour we did a quick questionnaire. Got a bag of educational pamphlets and a cool green water bottle. I look forward to learning more about nuclear power and am eager to return to Ameren Missouri in the near future.

I would recommend that anyone with questions concerning nuclear power contact your local power plant and ask questions, ask for a tour, and see what nuclear power plants have to offer the United States of America.
